DESIGN PROCESS & TEST

This design started with the design of characters, then came to the sketching experiment. After deciding the animation of character-emoticons, I used After Effects to work out the animation. To make the idea came true, I learned about MAX/MSP to figure out the interaction. Finally, I invited some friends of mine to do some test work to see if this interaction work out.

1. DESIGN BACKGROUND

ways of expressing emotion.png

Now we can see several ways can we convey our emotion through social networks. They all use touching the screen or facial recognizing to make emoticons. Meanwhile, few people are aware of voice & typography could also be used to make emoticons to express our feelings. So I built up a connection of voice, typography & emoticon in this interaction design.

2. RESEARCH

As we all know that when we are happy, angry, or depressed, our voice could be varied compared to our normal voice. Several companies such as EI Technologies, Beyond Verbal & Cogito, even have launched platforms which could analysis the voice of users & predict the emotion. By doing this, the platforms could help doctors to monitor their patients’ sentiment.

As there are two main kinds of character systems widely used by people– Phonograph & Ideograph, the Chinese character system is the most typical kind of Ideograph. As the Ideograph originated from Hieroglyph, so Chinese characters can be written like draw a painting. According to this, I think Chinese characters can be directly made for expressions.

3. CHARACTER DESIGN

Strokes, Parts & Structures are the three most essential factors in writing Chinese characters. Because Chinese characters look like squares, so in Chinese characters’ structures, to maintain the balance of the characters, the characters’ center of gravity is critical.

To use Chinese characters to make emoticons, I used 哈,啊,哇, which mean “ Ha”, “ Ah”, “ Wow” in English to do an experiment.

From an emotional perspective & Follow Chinese characters’ balance rules to redesign the characters
